“Japanese Tanka Poetry, Agroecology, and the Spiritual Connection to Land and Nature: What Poets, Farmers, Writers, and Buddhism Can Teach Us About Regaining Balance

  • Zen Life and Meditation Center 46 Lake Street Oak Park, IL, 60302 United States (map)

Writer and editor Nancy Matsumoto will introduce two of her books, By the Shore of Lake Michigan, and Reaping What She Sows: How Women Are Rebuilding Our Broken Food System and explore their shared themes of resilience through connecting to the land, weaving in the words of other writers, farmers, and Buddhist thinkers.  By the Shore of Lake Michigan is a collection of Japanese tanka poetry by her maternal grandparents, which span the years of their incarceration in a World War II prison camp in Wyoming, and their subsequent relocation to Chicago. Reaping What She Sows tells the story of women farmers and food producers who work in harmony with nature and ecosystems to undo the damage wrought by 80 years of industrialized agriculture, and show us a better way to live and eat. 10 am -11 am Central Time.
